There are several steps you must follow to collect data using our GeoXM / ArcPad7 setup.

  1. Create a folder on the device to store your data
  2. Create your point, line, and/or polygon shapefiles (inside ArcPad)
  3. Activate the GPS unit (inside ArcPad)
  4. Activate the layers (inside ArcPad)
  5. Collect the data (inside ArcPad)

Create a folder on the device to store your data:

  • Start > Programs > File Explorer
  • Menu (bottom right) > My Documents (should be top item)
  • Menu > New Folder
    • name the folder
    • IN THE FOLLOWING STEPS, STORE ALL DATA IN THE FOLDER YOU JUST CREATED

Create your shapefiles

The following instructions assume you have started and are currently in ArcPad 7
Repeat these steps for at least each feature type (point, line, polygon) you will be collecting.

  • Click on the down-arrow to the right of the OpenFile icon
  • Select NEW >SHAPEFILE... (image 1 below)
  • Specify the type dialog that appears:  either point,polyline, or polygon(image 2 below)
  • Add at least 1 field by clicking on the "+" symbol in the lower-left (image 2 below)
    • fields can either be text, numeric, a date, or True/false
    • tap OK to add the field
  • Tap OK in the New Shapefile dialog (image 2 below)
  • Name the new shapefile
    • Name:  must be a unique name
    • Folder:  this is the folder you created in the first step
    • hit SAVE
  • Tap YES on the Create QuickForm window that popped up
    • Check the boxes next to "Picture Page", "Symbology Page", "Attributes Page", and "Geography Page" (Image 3 below)
    • Hit OK in the lower-left

Activate the GPS receiver

  • Click on the down-arrow next to the GPS Utilities icon  and select "Activate GPS" (image 4 below)
  • Select "GPS Position Window" to monitor the satellite geometry
    • Your current coordinates will be shown in this window if the GPS is tracking suitable satellites,  otherwise, "No FIX" will be displayed

Make layers active (editable)

  • Open the Layers dialog 
  • Check the (3) boxes next to the layers to which you want to add data (image 5 below)
  • This can also be done using the Start/Stop editing button 
    • A red box is shown around the editable layers

Collect the data

  • Point Data:
    • Select the point capture tool (image 6 below)
    • Click on the Collect Point icon  to initiate data capture (left button above)
    • Hit the OK icon in the lower-left to close the feature
  • Polyline Data (aka lines):
    • Click on the down arrow next to the Collect Point icon and select the polyline capture tool (image 6 below)
    • Click on the Continuous Vertices button to start data capture (right button above)
    • Click the  icon in the lower-left to close the feature
  • Polygon Data:
    • Click on the down arrow next to the Collect Point icon and select elect the polygon capture tool (image 6 below)
    • Click on the Continuous Vertices button to start data capture (right button above)
    • Click the  icon in the lower-left to close the feature
